This March, the Center for Constructive Alternatives series dealt with the topic of Sport and Character. In today’s age, sport and sporting events have become pinnacles of American entertainment, money, and paparazzi. One is inundated with constant updates regarding football scores, feuds between athletes, and controversy over refereeing. With sport being such a focus in media and society, it often seems that sport and character are incompatible. Too often one sees an athlete get caught using illegal performance enhancing drugs, having an affair, or lying and cheating. Sport appears to be just like any other secular and commercial entertainment: decadent, impaired, and ultimately characterless. This month’s Center for Constructive†¦show more content†¦Novak then criticized the current news and sports media of today. Upset at how the media were currently portraying sports, he derided the journalists as â€Å"amateur social scientists.† Instead of tr ying to pigeon-hole sports into some social science or ‘social experiment’, sport should be seen as rituals concerning human survival on this planet: liturgical enactments of animal perfection and the struggles of the human spirit to prevail. As Mr. Novak showcased throughout his lecture, sport captures the struggle of man throughout history. This struggle is personified through the linebacker tackling the halfback, the pitcher recomposing himself after giving up a run, or a runner shaking off cramping as she attempts to complete the marathon. Sports are the human experience. Mr. Schilling’s talk set a tone unlike any other. That night, he presented a striking case for why character is influenced by sport. Drawing on his own personal experiences, Mr. Schilling said that he has come to learn that you can only gain wisdom through experiences. The experiences through sport that Mr. Schilling went through ultimately lead to the formation of the man that he is today. Sport also provides example of and experience with good leadership. Mr. Schilling talked about leadership, noting that while anyone can be a leader, there are very few leaders in the world. Although Mr. Schilling had been present among

American History X offers opinions from two sides through one character, the ex-neo Nazi Derek, and the post-prison-reformed Derek. The post-prison-formed Derek serves as a vision of hope for present time. This powerful movie not only depicts the most disturbing aspects of racism, but also shows how close racism is to the middle-class, white Americans. American History X is a fictional story that is told through the eyes of Derek’s brother Daniel, who is being recruited in the white power movement. This white power movement, also called skinheads, demonstrates how†¦show more content†¦This store was chosen because it used to be run by whites, with white associates, who got fired and replaced by Mexican associates with a Korean management. The skinheads agreed they should attack the Koreans for hiring â€Å"border jumpers† and so they did. Later, Daniel recalls when their mother invited the boy’s Jewish history teacher over for dinner. Things turned out of control with Derek’s sister stood up against her brother, saying that what he was doing was wrong and she didn’t agree. The argument turned violent so fast when Derek grabbed his sister’s hair and began to choke her. After an argument, Derek yelled at the teacher, and showed him his Swastika tattoo, affirming that it meant â€Å"not welcome.† Derek’s mom says Derek needs to move out by the morning. After everyone has fallen asleep, Daniel informs Derek that two black guys are breaking into his car. It is this night that Derek murders the two black guys and gets arrested shortly after pulling the trigger. Derek killed one by a terrible act known as curbing, even after the death of the two, his facial expression showed no remorse. In prison, Derek unhesitatingly realizes he is the minority. There are two similar stories that describe two particular women in a psychological condition one of the stories is called â€Å"The Yellow Wall-Paper†, written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s and the other written by William Faulkner named â€Å"A Rose for Emily†. Both authors mention how both Jane (Yellow Wall-Paper) and Miss Emily (A Rose for Emily)are being oppressed by their husbands because the typical tradition forces their wife’s to stay home while they go to work. In the early eighteen and nineteen hundreds, females were expected to become dependent on men for their livelihood, which at the times lead to depression and hysteria of being a submissive female. The male characters were seen as being inferior between the women. Therefore, women could not be superior to a man, because they were seen intelligent, and were the ones who controlled every aspect of the women, as if they were property. How many people take time to go outside of their own religious community to talk about others’ point of view and beliefs? This can be an eye opener to why they do specific actions. The insight to the objects, beliefs and what they hold sacred can create a greater understanding and appreciation for the individuals. For this project, I choose to interview a coworker, one who I had not taken the time to ask about his religion/beliefs prior to this project. I am a non-practicing, non-religious person. I spent a morning talking to Stanley. He identifies as a non-denominational Christian. He not only has strong religious beliefs, he is a pastor in the community. He often spends his free time going to church, home calls and to the hospital to pray and help those in need with religious counseling. He is highly dedicated to his beliefs. As he responded to my questions to further understand the difference between his life and my own, it was apparent he is unwavering and set in his beliefs.
